ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

Many of us have happy memories of watching our favourite tennis players on TV, or even live, over the years. Tennis superstars like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the men’s game and Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams all dominating in the women’s game. We’re not all superstars, but that doesn’t stop many of us enjoying playing tennis at our local club or park with family or friends.
Whether indoors or outdoors, tennis courts are a consistent size, in line with guidance from the International Tennis Federation (ITF). And when it comes to the lighting of these courts, it can extend playing time whether it be for televised professional games through to increasing income for revenue based facilities.

KEY LIGHTING CRITERIA

Designs will need to be made in accordance with the appropriate class in relation to regional standards, for example EN 12193 in Europe, UTSA in the USA or AS 2560 in Australia. This is unless there are higher requirements from a governing body such as WTA.
Regardless of whichever standard is applied, there are key design considerations common throughout. Appropriate horizontal and vertical illuminance is paramount with good uniformity at the playing area, free of shadows. Good glare control to allow players to concentrate on the game and spectators to enjoy watching, without any discomfort.
Carefully positioned floodlights to ensure no shadows are cast by parts of the infrastructure, such as the grandstands, canopies or pillars. Not forgetting that colour temperature and quality should suit the space.

A CONNECTED TEAM

EVEN IN SINGLES, IT TAKES A TEAM TO WIN, AND AT THORN, WE’RE NO DIFFERENT.
Combining our luminaires with connectivity solutions creates the perfect team, tailored to suit the demands of any tennis application.
There are multiple benefits which can be realised when lighting controls are included in a sports lighting project including fine-tuning of desired lighting levels, energy savings when compared to conventional technology and importantly a reduction of light pollution. The introduction of sport lighting controls can result in lower carbon emission, lower energy costs alongside a reduction in operating costs. A winning combination.
