WORLD CLASS LIGHTING FOR PLAYERS AND FANS ALIKE

WE CAME TO WIN

Football is (probably) the most popular spectator sport in the world with huge levels of participation at both professional and amateur level. Enjoyed by many, regardless of age, gender, nationality or religion, it’s a great way to socialise and maintain good health and well-being. Due to the sport’s popularity, the need for new and refurbished football facilities continues to grow. While high quality lighting solutions ensure the best standards of play with great illumination, visual comfort and compatibility with high-definition HD TV, sustainability is also another major consideration in today’s installations.

CREATING AN EXPERIENCE THROUGH LIGHTING

DIFFERENT BY DESIGN

While all football stadiums have one thing in common (a rectangular pitch), the surrounding stadiums may differ wildly. Some might have multi-tiered covered stands, while others one tier of uncovered seating. This means lighting needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Our in-house team of experts are dedicated to the development of new optical systems, including those for sports applications. Sports optics are developed using simulation software and physically tested using a far-field goniophotometer to measure intensity and luminous flux of all our luminaire solutions.
Thorn’s asymmetric optics are key for sports applications, where the luminaire can be mounted horizontally at 0 degrees to reduce light pollution and maintain a perfectly illuminated field of play.

EXPERTS IN WINDAGE

Thermal management and aerodynamic analysis

Critical for both new installations and refurbishment projects, windage must be considered to reduce physical stress on the mounting infrastructure.
Thorn Lighting use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, used by Formula 1 motorsport teams, to perform thermal management and aerodynamic analysis.
Thorn’s Altis solution includes a patented heat sink design which reduces resistance to wind and allows air flow in any direction. Project specific windage calculations can be supplied as part of the services package from Thorn to ensure your project application is optimised for windage.

THE LOVE OF THE GAME

CONTROLLING LIGHT SPILL

Whether stadium lighting, or recreational pitches, light spill should therefore be carefully controlled, considering times of use, sky glow, light trespass and luminous intensities outside the field of play. For spectators and players to enjoy the game comfortably, good uniformity of light and low glare is important.
The use of controls (switching or dimming) for different light levels can help here alongside assisting in the reduction of energy and cost.
