The importance of Dark Skies

NIGHTTUNE WHITEPAPER

According to the 2016 ‘The new world atlas of artificial night sky brightness’ study, 80 % of the world’s population lives under skyglow, while in the United States and Europe, 99 % of the public can’t experience a ‘natural night’. (Falchi F, et al, 2016)
As an example the Dark Sky Association explains that, “The light from a parking lot lit up at 3am when no one is around is waste. The porch-light that shines in a neighbour’s bedroom is waste. The street illuminated to ten times the recommended level is waste… In the United States, a conservative estimate of savings by completing the transition to LED Lights and using lighting control systems is at least $ 15.4 billion annually by 2035.” With that highlighted, it is widely recognised that more must be done to protect this planet. As a manufacturer, Thorn has a huge responsibility to meet customers’ demands while also respecting the environment and doing as much as possible to mitigate any negative impacts of lighting.
In this whitepaper, studies and academic articles are used to examine the problems caused by artificial light at night (ALAN) and to demonstrate why our NightTune technology was developed and how it can help to counteract these.

UNDER THE LIGHTS

A standout partnership for Thorn Lighting has been with Sunderland FC, located near our Spennymoor headquarters. The recent lighting upgrade there has enhanced the fan experience both in-stadium and for viewers watching live broadcasts. The club’s choice to work with Thorn and Zumtobel was also driven by our local manufacturing base—just 21 miles from the stadium—enabling swift delivery, seamless installation, and a boost to the local economy. A true win-win.
