Enhancing Sustainability with Smart Lighting Solutions
As part of Gatwick Airport’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2030, the airport has been investing in sustainable infrastructure improvements. One key initiative involved upgrading the lighting in multi-storey car parks 1, 2, 3, and 5, along with surrounding walkways. The goal was to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and enhance safety for passengers and staff. Thorn Lighting was selected to provide an innovative lighting solution that supports Gatwick’s long-term sustainability strategy.
Thorn Lighting introduced its Aquaforce Pro luminaires, which are IP66-certified, meaning they are resistant to water, dust, and impact—ideal for high-traffic airport environments. The installation also includes basicDIM wireless controls, allowing for adaptive lighting that optimizes energy consumption while maintaining excellent visibility. This smart system eliminates lighting inconsistencies and ensures a well-lit, comfortable environment for both pedestrians and drivers.
Proven Benefits and Long-Term Savings
With the new LED system, Gatwick expects substantial reductions in energy consumption and operational costs. The improved uniformity of light enhances safety and passenger experience while contributing to the airport’s "Decade of Change" sustainability initiative.
"Thorn’s expertise reassured us that we could align this project with our long-term goals. The new lighting solution not only improves efficiency but also enhances the overall car park experience for our passengers."
