Illuminating History
At Thorn, our lighting solutions enhance the beauty of architecture, including for some of the world’s most recognisable buildings. In 2019, the 860-year-old Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, suffered a devastating fire. A global effort followed to return this historic building to its former glory.
In the latest collaboration between Thorn Lighting and world-renowned artist and lighting designer Patrick Rimoux, we have supplied bespoke lighting products, as well as our specialist expertise, to the renovation project.

To find the right lighting solution to properly highlight the vaults of the cathedral’s nave and transept, our team worked closely with Patrick over the course of three years.
Tailored Lighting Solutions
Our contrast projectors emerged as the ideal solution to ensure the building’s unique architecture is showcased to the millions of people who visit every year. To achieve the exacting requirements, we designed and supplied 54 modified versions of our powerful yet low-energy medium-beam contrast lighting luminaries.
These bespoke units included LEDs with colour temperatures from 2200K to 5000K, and we used our RDMX drivers to provide advanced control of the lighting. This dual-white LED system enables subtle colour mixing and precise scene control, ensuring full compatibility with the architectural features and enhancing the new white hue of the stonework. The versatility of the lighting allows it to be adapted to suit various uses, including liturgy, events, and concerts.
To seamlessly integrate with Notre-Dame’s architecture, we customised the projectors’ finish to mimic the cathedral’s light beige stone, helping them blend into their surroundings.
