Pembrokeshire County Council aimed to create a modern, flexible learning environment with the construction of Gelliswick Primary School in Milford Haven. Replacing two older schools, the £12 million facility accommodates 515 pupils and includes an early years unit, a complex needs unit, and community spaces. A key goal was to enhance the learning experience, improve student well-being and attendance, and establish a welcoming space for families. To achieve this, an advanced lighting solution was required—one that balances energy efficiency, visual comfort, and long-term sustainability.
Thorn Lighting collaborated with Hoare Lea Cardiff and Highadmit Projects to design an efficient and comfortable lighting system. IQ Wave luminaires were selected for classrooms and offices, offering intelligent controls, superior light distribution, and low glare (UGR 19) for a comfortable learning environment. In corridors, Chalice downlights provided a 60% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional options, while Cetus downlights ensured optimal illumination in bathroom areas. Additionally, the robust Aquaforce LED luminaires were installed in storage areas, delivering high-performance lighting in wet and dusty conditions.
Energy Savings and Long-Term Performance
The school’s lighting installation provides uniform illumination with reduced glare, fostering an ideal atmosphere for education. Emergency lighting is secured by Voyager C, offering reliable three-hour manual test functionality. With energy-efficient fixtures and long-lasting LEDs, Gelliswick Primary School benefits from lower maintenance costs and improved sustainability. The lighting solution ensures the best quality education for students while supporting the school’s commitment to serving the local community.
"A well-lit environment fosters better learning, enhances well-being, and creates a space where both students and the community can thrive."
