A State-of-the-Art Learning Environment in Oxford

After sixty years, Oxford welcomed a new school, 'Swan School', a modern secondary school and sixth form designed to provide high-quality education for 1,260 students. Located in Marston, the three-story building features 62 classrooms, an assembly hall, drama and dance studios, and a central atrium where students gather. The school’s design embraces functionality and innovation, creating an inspiring space that supports both academic success and social interaction

Intelligent Lighting for Better Acoustics and Learning

A major design challenge was the concrete ceilings, which reflect sound and can negatively impact classroom acoustics. Poor sound quality can make lessons harder to follow and strain teachers’ voices. Working with Zumtobel Lighting and LJJ Mechanical & Electrical Contractors, Thorn introduced Arena Symphony LED raft luminaires, which not only provide bright and efficient lighting but also absorb sound, creating an optimal learning atmosphere. This smart integration of lighting and acoustics ensures that both students and teachers benefit from a more comfortable and effective environment.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Learning with Smart Illumination

Recognizing the benefits of outdoor learning, the project incorporated well-lit exterior spaces to allow students to move safely between indoor and outdoor areas. Thorn’s R2L2 road lanterns and Orus low-level luminaires ensure safety in car parks, while Urba Deco pathway lighting enhances aesthetics and navigation. The result is a lighting scheme that combines function, efficiency, and design, delivering an inspiring and future-proofed learning environment for the next generation.
